Every ad that expires leaves an address someone already knows
A classified has an expiration date, but its address may have been shared, linked or indexed. When it expires, that address keeps receiving visits and somebody has to decide what it answers.
In WPAdverts an expired ad answers with a 404 error by default, and you can change it to a 301 redirect or to a visible page without contact details.
WPAdverts is a classified ads plugin for WordPress. With its free core, users post ads and visitors browse them by category, and it is extended with modules and extensions.
A listing with prior approval of ads
- Grid or list listing, with categories and subcategories.
- Search with filters for the visitor, which you can also turn off.
- Moderation, flagging and approval queue: with moderation on, ads are not published until an administrator approves them.
- Landing pages by shortcode for chosen categories or locations.
- WordPress blocks: Classifieds List, Search, Publish, Manage and Categories, plus two ready-made layout patterns.
- Works with any WordPress theme, with ads, categories and options in the usual admin.
What an expired ad answers
Three things are configured from the core options: the HTTP status of the expired ad, the redirect address (only for the 301) and who can keep viewing it, which defaults to the administrator.
- 404: visitors and search engines see a not-found page.
- 301: sends visitors to another page, for example one with the ads list, and passes the SEO value of links on to it.
- 200: the page stays visible with contact details disabled, and the ad leaves the listing.
Advertiser panel and add-ons
The management panel shows each user their ads with thumbnail, title, price and expiration date if they exist, and buttons to view, edit and delete. Each ad shows a status icon: featured, expired, pending approval or saved but unpaid. "Renew Ad" appears only if the payments module is active and a renewal price is set.
The plugin ships its own modules for payments, featured ads, contact form, emails and bank transfer. Separate paid extensions include Stripe, PayPal Payments Standard and WooCommerce Payments, and there are others for custom fields, maps and locations, memberships and currencies. The old shortcodes for posting and managing are deprecated and blocks replace them.
Getting started
It does not need a specific theme. The posting form and the management panel are placed on pages with their blocks, and the flow works from there. To start:
- Upload the plugin with the WordPress installer and activate it.
- Create a page with the Classifieds List block for the listing.
- Create another with Classifieds Publish so users can post.
- Create a third with Classifieds Manage for the advertiser panel.
- In the core options, decide what an expired ad answers.
- Post a test ad and check how it looks in the listing.
