About AdSanity - Ad Block Detection
Someone who does not know you has no reason to turn off their blocker
A visitor arrives at your site for the first time with an ad blocker active. They do not know who you are, have not read anything of yours and have no reason to change their settings for you. If the first thing they see is a wall demanding that they turn it off, they may leave.
Demanding that the blocker be turned off asks for a favor before giving anything, which is why the hard mode fits better on a site that already offers something recognizable.
Ad Block Detection is an AdSanity add-on that detects blockers as soon as the visitor arrives and shows them a pop-up notice. You choose how the site responds: ask them to disable it or give a grace period before reading the content.
What it does when a visitor arrives with a blocker
- Automatic detection: the add-on checks whether a blocker is active when the visitor reaches the site.
- Pop-up notice: only people with an active blocker see it. Anyone without one sees no notice.
- Content blocking: you can require the visitor to disable their blocker before continuing.
- Grace period: you can offer some time to read the content before the change is required.
The notice takes the text you write. A bold headline saying the blocker has been detected, an explanation of why ads matter to someone who does not pay for the content and, if you like, a link to a page explaining how to disable it.
How to choose between blocking and a grace period
A site with a subscription can turn off advertising for those who pay, so blocking outright comes naturally. On a new site, the grace period lets the visitor get to know what you offer first.
If you are unsure, start with the grace period and review the result: it is a criterion that depends on your audience and your content, and you should test it on your site. Visit your own website with a blocker active and again without it, and check what each visitor sees and that the notice text reads well.
Who the notice affects and what it asks of you
- It needs AdSanity installed and active. It is an add-on of the main plugin.
- It acts only on people with an active blocker. All other visitors browse normally.
- You write the message: the add-on does not write it for you.
- The choice between demanding and giving a grace period is an editorial decision that affects how many visitors get to read your content.
How to turn it on
You need AdSanity active, with your ads already running.
- Install and activate the add-on like any WordPress plugin.
- Open its settings and choose between requiring the blocker to be disabled or giving a grace period.
- Write the notice with a clear headline, the explanation of the reason and, if you like, the link to a page with instructions.
- Visit your site with a blocker active and without one to check the notice before leaving it in front of everyone.
AdSanity add-ons in the catalog
Among the other AdSanity add-ons in the catalog are Weighted Ads, User Role Ad Visibility and Impressions.
If you want to rotate several ads in the same slot, Rotating Ad Widget rotates a group of ads within the same page.
