About AffiliateWP Signup Referrals Addon
A new account pays nothing yet, and here it already earns a commission
On your site people create their account first and buy later, if they buy at all. Your affiliates bring you those signups, but AffiliateWP's standard behavior credits them for a completed sale or a submitted form, and the signup on its own adds nothing for them.
Paying for a signup means the money is committed before any comes in. That is the decision behind this addon: what each new account is worth to you, depending on the door it came through, and who looks at those commissions before they are paid.
Signup Referrals is an AffiliateWP addon that awards a flat-rate commission to the affiliate when the person they referred completes a sign up, which typically means filling in a form that creates a WordPress user account.
Six signup doors that can generate the commission
- Affiliate registration: the referred person joins your own program. AffiliateWP's default form counts, placed with
[affiliate_registration],[affiliate_area]or the Affiliate Registration block. - WooCommerce: signups on My Account or at checkout.
- Easy Digital Downloads: signups through
[edd_register]or at checkout, when account creation is enabled. - Gravity Forms: signups made with its User Registration add-on.
- Ultimate Member: accounts created with that plugin.
- UserPro: accounts created with that plugin.
Each integration appears in the settings only if the matching plugin is installed.
One amount per door and a status that gives you room to review
Enabling an integration reveals its own amount field, so a signup in the store can be worth something different from one in Gravity Forms. If you leave the amount at 0, a 0.00 referral is created.
The status is your checkpoint. Signup referrals can be created as pending or as unpaid, and that setting applies to all signup referrals without touching sale referrals.
Affiliate registrations carry one more detail: the new affiliate's record in the admin shows the ID of the affiliate who referred them.
When the commission is not created, and when two could be
- Automatic affiliate registration: enabling "Automatically register new user accounts as affiliates" does not generate a signup referral.
- Methods not enabled: a form or route you did not tick in the settings does not count.
- Manual approval: with "Require approval" on, the affiliate registration referral arrives when you approve that person.
- Percentages: it only accepts flat-rate amounts.
Double commissions appear at checkout, when a purchase and a registration happen together. "WooCommerce – Disable Checkout Referral" and "EDD – Disable Checkout Referral" exist to prevent that; the second limits referrals to [edd_register] only.
If you use affiliate forms in Gravity Forms or Ninja Forms, disable the Affiliate Registration type to avoid duplicates, or use a single flat amount here and turn off form-based referrals.
Activating it inside AffiliateWP
You need AffiliateWP installed and active, plus the plugin for each integration you want to reward.
- Activate AffiliateWP, this addon and the registration plugins you will use.
- Go to AffiliateWP » Settings » Integrations and find the Signup Referrals section.
- Tick the registration types that generate commission.
- Choose the default status for new referrals.
- Enter the amount for each type.
- Run a test signup from an affiliate link and review the referral it creates.
When the reward should arrive another way
AffiliateWP is the base plugin for this addon. If your business charges by subscription, Recurring Referrals creates commissions on every renewal from a referred customer, and can cap how many are generated.
If you would rather reward signups without settling money, GamiPress Referrals turns each referral into a GamiPress event, with points, achievements or ranks as the prize.
Three cases when setting the commission
Can it be a percentage?
No. Signup Referrals works with flat-rate amounts.
What happens if someone registers and buys at the same time?
There can be two commissions. The Disable Checkout Referral options for WooCommerce and Easy Digital Downloads are there to prevent it.
Does automatic affiliate registration count?
No. That option automates the affiliate signup, and it is not a signup action for this addon.
