About Borlabs Cookie WordPress Plugin

A badly set up cookie banner doesn't fail where you can see it. It looks fine, the visitor clicks «Accept» or «Reject», but the YouTube video, the map or the external font was already loaded before anyone decided anything. That is what Borlabs Cookie tries to prevent: nothing external loads until the visitor gives consent.

Your website talks to third parties more than you think

Whoever installs this usually has a WordPress site with several plugins, a map, embedded videos, maybe Google Analytics or ad campaigns. Any of them can send data to an outside server from the very first visit. The uncomfortable part is that almost nobody knows exactly which ones do, because it doesn't show in the design. Borlabs Cookie includes a scanner that analyzes your site and recommends the packages from its library that match what you have installed, so you start from a real list and not a hunch.

What Borlabs Cookie does with consent

  • Prior consent: services, cookies and scripts only load once the user agrees, and they can accept service by service.
  • Content blocker: keeps YouTube, Google Maps and other external content covered until permission is given.
  • Script and style blocker: stops external JavaScript files, CSS and web fonts from loading before consent.
  • Service groups: the visitor accepts several services at once, and you can customize the groups.
  • Country restriction: asks for consent specifically from EU visitors.
  • Google Consent Mode and TCF: supports Google's basic and advanced modes, and is compatible with the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework v2.4, useful if you run campaigns or ad revenue.
  • Self-hosted: visitor data stays on your server.

One limit worth being clear about: the plugin handles technical consent, but the privacy policy, what data you process and on what legal basis remain your responsibility. It also won't cover a service that isn't in the library unless you configure it: for something of your own you'll have to create the service by hand.

Design, accessibility and languages

There are more than 300 settings, 150 of them for design. A color assistant generates WCAG-compliant designs from just three colors, and the consent dialog meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA. For multilingual sites it works with WPML, Polylang, TranslatePress and Weglot. It comes translated by native speakers into eight languages (Danish, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Polish), and your own services, groups, providers and blockers are automatically translated into the others.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. A setup assistant offers three modes: quick, custom and guided. With the quick one the process is almost automatic.

Is it suitable for agencies with many clients?

Yes. There are different roles for owners, team members and clients, a central view of the sites with their version status and pending packages, and automation with Composer and WP CLI.

What if the package for a plugin I use is missing?

The library has over 370 packages of services and content blockers. If yours is missing, you can create the service manually.

Does it guarantee I comply with the GDPR?

No. It is a tool for managing consent; whether your site complies with the regulations also depends on how you use it and what you publish.

The scanner decides where to start the setup

Start with the quick assistant and let the scanner review the site. Then go through the recommended packages and check which services are left uncovered. Test the site in a private window without accepting anything: if Analytics, a map or a video still loads, that is a service left to configure.
