When a photo of yours shows up on someone else's site with no credit
Publishing your own photos on WordPress has a side effect few people plan for: anyone can save them, upload them to another site and use them with nothing to show who made them. Marking every image by hand in an editor before uploading is repetitive work that usually gets dropped. This addon applies the watermark from within Envira Gallery galleries, without touching files one by one.
Think about the business of the person installing it: photographers, designers, bloggers or stores with product photography. Images are their raw material, yet the brand rarely travels with them. A well-placed watermark turns every stray copy into an ad for whoever made it.
Text, logo or image: the watermark you design
You can use text, a logo, a copyright symbol or any image as your mark. You can adjust these aspects:
- Font, size, color and rotation (for text watermarks).
- Position within the photo and margins.
- A repeated mark across the whole image, useful if you don't want a corner to be cropped out.
You can also generate a copy of the original image without the mark, so you never lose your clean file.
Automating the mark on new and existing images
It is switched on in the gallery settings: you choose the mark, position it and save. From then on, images you upload to that gallery carry it. If you already had published photos, there is an option to apply it to existing ones. Images that already have a watermark stay as they are, so marks don't get duplicated.
It is a clear advantage if you manage many galleries with the same brand criteria: you define the design once and avoid some photos having the mark while others don't.
Full protection isn't in this addon
It helps to have clear expectations. This is what it covers and what you will need to solve elsewhere:
- What it solves: placing a visible text or image watermark on the photos in your galleries, automatically and with customization.
- What it doesn't solve on its own: it needs Envira Gallery as a base, because it is an add-on and doesn't work alone.
- By hand or with another tool: photos published outside Envira galleries, such as loose images in posts or in the theme, don't go through this system.
- Other Envira features: blocking right-click, password-protecting galleries or running client proofing are separate Envira Gallery features, not part of this addon.
A watermark makes unauthorized use harder, but it doesn't completely prevent it: if it is very discreet, someone can crop or retouch it out. That's why it's worth choosing a position and size that can't easily be removed without spoiling the photo.
How to decide on your mark with Envira Gallery Watermarking Addon
A practical tip: test the mark on both light and dark photos. A white mark can vanish against a sky, and a dark one can get lost in a night scene. Also check how it looks in thumbnails and in the lightbox, because that is where visitors will first see your photos.
If you sell photography, a large repeated mark protects more but spoils the image. If your main goal is brand recognition, a small logo in a corner is usually enough.
