About Memberpress Gifting Addon

Gifting a monthly membership means gifting one month

Someone comes to your site looking for a present, ticks the box and pays for your monthly membership. The recipient registers, enjoys the content and, when the first cycle ends, the subscription expires. Their access ends there, and no message of yours goes with it unless you prepared one. That moment decides whether the gift leaves you a member or just a sale.

A gifted recurring membership is a sale with an expiry date, and the work that matters sits in the email that goes out afterward. MemberPress Gifting gives you the mechanics of the gift: the checkbox, the link, the registration. The message inviting people to stay is yours to write.

It also pays to be clear about what the giver is buying. On a recurring membership the gift is valid for the first cycle, so your sales copy should say so. That keeps anyone from believing they gave a year when they paid for a month.

How a gift travels, step by step

  1. The buyer ticks the gift option on the membership registration form and pays.
  2. They fill in a pop-up with their name, the recipient's name and email, and a note.
  3. The recipient gets an email with the redemption link and that personal message.
  4. They complete the standard registration. The subscription starts when they click Signup.

Each gift creates a coupon in GIFT-XXXX format under MemberPress > Coupons. Under MemberPress > Transactions these operations appear as Gifts Purchased or Gifts Claimed.

The giver's account does its share of the work

  • Automatic signup: a buyer who was not a member becomes one.
  • Gifts tab: it offers Copy Gift URL and Send Gift Email, and shows whether the gift was redeemed.
  • Two contacts per sale: you keep the email of the giver and of the recipient.
  • Their own gifts only: sending the email is limited to members and to gifts they completed.

Rules that shape your offer

  • Recurring: the gift covers the first cycle, and then the subscription expires.
  • Trial periods: they are overridden. With a seven-day trial on a monthly membership, the recipient gets one month.
  • Free memberships: a free membership cannot be gifted.
  • Active members: if the buyer already holds that membership, the purchase is treated as a gift, unless you allow multiple active subscriptions to it.
  • Cart: gifts can be added to the cart and carry their badge at checkout and on the order, upsell offers and plan change rules are skipped, and the gift code cannot be typed into the coupon field.

How to turn it on, and which email to prepare first

You need MemberPress up and running, because this add-on does not work alone. Then:

  1. Install it from MemberPress > Add-ons. The same button activates it.
  2. Open the membership and tick Allow this membership to be gifted in its options.
  3. Create an After Gifted Membership Expires reminder under MemberPress > Reminders, explaining that access has ended and that registering again is required.
  4. Adjust its text under MemberPress > Settings > Emails and run a full test purchase.

Selling to groups or gifting balance

For a company or family paying for a set number of users, MemberPress Corporate Accounts fits better, with sub-accounts under one holder. If you sell from WooCommerce and want to gift balance instead of a specific membership, look at PW WooCommerce Gift Cards Pro, which includes a PDF card. If you do not have the base yet, start from MemberPress.

Questions while preparing the campaign

Does the recipient pay anything to redeem?

The gift arrives as a link to a normal registration form, and the subscription starts on submitting it. Run a test purchase to see the screen they will get.

Can I gift a course?

Yes, if access to the course is sold as a membership with gifting turned on.

Can every membership be gifted by default?

No. The option is ticked on each membership you want to offer as a gift.

What if the gift email does not arrive?

The buyer can resend it or copy the link from the Gifts tab in their account.

How do I know which gifts are still unclaimed?

The buyer sees it in their account. You can tell purchases from claims in Transactions.

Can I connect gifts to other tools?

Developers have events for gift purchased, sent and claimed.
