About The Fox – Minimal WordPress Blog Magazine Theme
Your clean design faces its real test with the first ad
You pick a minimalist theme because your articles can breathe: good typography, wide margins and nothing to distract. You publish for months, visitors arrive and you decide to earn from them. You paste one code above the article, another under the title and one more in the sidebar, and the page that won you over already looks like something else.
On a small magazine, restraint and advertising compete for the same space, and that negotiation goes better before you need the money.
The Fox, by withemes, now HeronWP, is a WordPress theme for magazines, news sites and blogs. Its value at that moment is that the ad slots are already planned into the design, so you can choose which to use and leave the rest empty.
Where each ad can go
The positions are split between the whole site, the homepage and the post:
- Sidebars and header: the (Fox) Ad widget works in the main sidebar, in the four footer sidebars, and before or after the header sidebar.
- Homepage: each builder section accepts an ad, with a banner option for tablet and mobile and visibility by screen size.
- Post: at the very top, between the title and the content, and after the content.
- Format: an image with a link, or code such as Google AdSense.
Those locations do not include insertion mid-text after a set number of paragraphs. If your model depends on that, check it before choosing. And remember that ads and third-party tracking code weigh on your speed score: it is worth measuring the site with each new position.
Its own homepage and the craft of a newsroom
The homepage is built with a dedicated builder, and the header with another one inside the WordPress Customizer, with a sticky menu and an off-canvas menu. Elementor is optional: it remains for pages such as About or Contact.
- Seven post layouts, with general settings that each article can override.
- Live posts for breaking news, with a red label on the post and on the homepage.
- Scored reviews on any post, with the score visible on thumbnails in lists.
- Co-authors with Co-Authors Plus and view counts with Post Views Counter.
- A sidebar after the content, meant for a donate button or a newsletter form.
- Share buttons for Bluesky and Threads, dark mode and a mega menu per item.
The work that falls to other plugins
Placing an ad and managing it are different jobs. Its features do not include campaign rotation or impression statistics, so selling space directly to several advertisers calls for another tool.
Paid reading relies on Restrict Content Pro, which the theme is compatible with. The newsletter needs Mailchimp for WP, contact forms use Contact Form 7 and the shop, WooCommerce. Translation goes through WPML or Polylang.
The theme does not solve speed alone either. It offers optional critical CSS and works with LiteSpeed Cache, WP Rocket and Imagify, but server response time depends on your hosting.
Installation, with the advertising left for last
The order that protects the design is this:
- Upload the theme. If WordPress warns that the stylesheet is missing, unzip the download and upload the inner fox.zip.
- Install the demo import plugin, needed for that step.
- Import the full demo or, if you already have content, just its settings and styles.
- Use the included child theme for any code change.
- Publish real content and measure speed before placing ads.
- Turn positions on one at a time, measuring after each change.
Magazines for other revenue models
If you need to place ads after a number of paragraphs, SmartMag has that location. If you want the paywall inside the theme itself, Soledad includes one, along with article submission from the site. And if you prefer to build with Elementor, Newzin is a newspaper and magazine theme with demos focused on a single subject.
AdSense, Elementor and demos in The Fox
Can I use Google AdSense?
Yes. The locations accept ad code, and also an image with a link.
Do I need Elementor?
No. The homepage is built with the theme's own builder, and Elementor is optional.
Can I apply a demo if I already have articles?
Yes. You can import only the settings and style, and leave out the sample posts.
