About Toolset Blocks

With dynamic fields, you test the template on the emptiest entry, not the sample one

You design the page for a content type on a sample entry that is complete and well filled in, and everything looks in place. But the template does not stay with that entry: it is applied to every other one, and each brings its own data.

A dynamic block takes its content from a field, so the design no longer depends on what you typed in the editor but on what each entry holds, which is why it is worth checking it with the entry that has the least data.

Toolset Blocks is Toolset's library of blocks for the WordPress block editor. It lets you visually design templates for custom content types, archives, lists, searches and maps, without writing code.

What you design and how dynamic content works

  • Templates for custom content types: with their custom fields and their taxonomy.
  • Archives: you drag elements, style them and build different designs for each archive.
  • Dynamic content lists: for example, top stories in a slider.
  • Custom search: you choose what to search by, design the search box and style the results.
  • Maps: you show items as markers on Google Maps and Azure Maps, choose which appear and style them with a visual builder.
  • Store blocks: the library includes, among others, Stock Status and Rating for WooCommerce.

Dynamic content can go in any block: a heading takes its text from the title, a button takes its text from a custom field and an image takes its source from a field. This integration supports relationships between content.

The Fields and Text block lets you wrap any content in conditional logic, so that part of the design appears only when the condition you define is met. The Content Template and Grid blocks, in the structure category, help arrange the template.

A page with an optional part, to test

An example using blocks it already has: you design the template for a content type and wrap in Fields and Text a fragment that depends on a field, with a condition on that field. That way the fragment is part of the page only when the condition is met.

It is our own combination. Try it with three entries: one with every field filled in, another with the field empty and a third with a relationship that has no items. See what is shown in each one and whether the design stays coherent. If something ends up out of place, adjust the condition and check again.

Limits of designing with blocks

This plugin designs inside the WordPress block editor, so it is no use to anyone who works only with the classic editor.

The data the blocks display has to exist beforehand: custom fields and relationships are defined in Toolset, and the block reads them.

Building the first template

You need WordPress with the block editor, any theme and the content types and fields you are going to display already created in Toolset.

  1. Install the plugin with the WordPress installer and activate it.
  2. Create or open the template for a custom content type in the block editor.
  3. Add the blocks and link each heading, text or image to its field.
  4. Wrap in Fields and Text anything that depends on an optional piece of data.
  5. Review the template with complete entries and with nearly empty ones.

Toolset and block libraries to compare

To compare the approach, look at Toolset Views and Toolset Types, from the same family. If you want a block library from another vendor, the catalog includes Kadence Blocks Pro.
