About WooCommerce Payment Gateway Based Fees
Adding 3% does not cover a 3% commission
If your gateway keeps a percentage of every sale, you may decide that cost should fall on whoever picks that payment method. It looks easy: if the commission is 3%, you add 3% to the order. When the month closes, the numbers still do not add up.
The reason is arithmetic. If the commission is calculated on what the customer actually pays rather than on the original price, that base already includes your surcharge. In that case, on an order of 100, you add 3 and charge 103. The gateway keeps 3% of 103, which is 3.09, and you are left with 99.91. That is nine cents on one order, but it repeats on all of them.
Payment Gateway Based Fees separates the two cases. "Add % to total" simply adds the percentage. "Include % in total" treats it as a commission, so that you receive the full amount: those same 100 become 103.09. With 10% on 200, the first option gives 220 and the second 222.22. If you want to recover a commission, the second is the one you need.
Calculation, limits and tax class per gateway
- Three calculation methods: fixed amount, percentage added to the total and percentage included in the total.
- Independent settings per gateway, disabled at first, plus fees of their own per product, which are added to the cart fee.
- Cart limits: maximum and minimum value beyond which the fee stops applying.
- Fee ceiling and floor: maximum and minimum calculated amount.
- Tax class for the fee and your own text to describe it on the order, translatable with WPML 4.2.8 or higher.
- Manual fees on orders already paid and on orders created from the admin area.
Test each payment method before publishing
A fee changes the order total, and the gateway has to receive that total with no surprises. Some buyers have reported problems with Google Pay orders through Stripe, and with PayPal orders that moved to failed with the notice "Payer action required".
That does not mean it happens to every store, but it is worth checking. Place a small real order with each method you offer, including the digital wallets your gateway enables by itself, and check three things: that the fee appears, that the payment completes and that the amount at the gateway matches the order.
Discounts, automated taxes and complex conditions
It does not apply discounts. It does not allow negative fees: to reward a payment method you have to lower the price or use a coupon.
It is not compatible with Jetpack automated taxes. You have to select "Disable automated taxes" on the WooCommerce tax tab. Support for WooCommerce Tax 2.8.8 or higher is in beta since version 5.2.
It does not evaluate complex conditions. It works with the gateway, the product, the cart value and a list of emails. Among its features there are no rules by country or customer role.
Requirements and settings in Additional Fees
It needs PHP 7.4, WordPress 6.0 or higher and WooCommerce 8.0 or higher, and it supports block checkout. The settings are in WooCommerce, Settings, Additional Fees:
- Find out the real commission of each gateway, with its fixed part if it has one.
- Enable fees only on the gateway you want to pass on.
- Choose "Include % in total" if the goal is to recover the commission.
- Write a clear text explaining the fee on the order.
- Set the limits and the tax class.
- Place a real order with each payment method.
Other ways to charge surcharges in the catalog
If you need broader conditions, WPC Smart Fees combines cart, product, customer, country and date rules, and allows negative fees, that is, discounts.
If you mainly want to reward one payment method as well as making another dearer, there is also Payment Gateway Based Fees and Discounts.
Questions about payment method fees
Which option recovers the gateway commission?
"Include % in total". It calculates the fee as a commission so that you receive the full order amount.
Can I apply the fee to PayPal only?

Can I give a discount for bank transfer?
Not with this plugin: it does not allow negative fees. You can lower the price or use a coupon.
Does it work with block checkout?
Yes, it supports WooCommerce Block Checkout since its version 5.0.
