About EDD Cross-sell and Upsell
For anyone selling downloads with Easy Digital Downloads who has more than one product that fits together
If you sell a single product with nothing to go alongside it, this plugin has little to work with: it needs other products in your catalog to point to. And since it is an extension for Easy Digital Downloads, it does not work with any other store system. Nor is it an automatic recommendation engine: you decide what is suggested and where, product by product.
The buyers who get the most from it already have a catalog with clear relationships: a plugin and its extended version, a course and its pack, an ebook and its companion guide.
The moment of purchase is the only time the customer already has their card in hand
In a download store the customer usually arrives with a fixed idea: one specific file. After paying they leave, and winning them back costs far more than offering something at the moment they have already decided to buy. EDD Cross-sell and Upsell works at two different points of that journey, and it pays not to mix them up.
Cross-sell: at checkout
When someone has a product in the cart, other products that complement it are suggested, shown on the checkout page. It adds an extra to a purchase that is already decided, without the customer having to go back to the catalog.
Upsell: on the product page
While the visitor is looking at a product, a similar one of slightly higher value is proposed, for example a bundle that also includes it. It appears on the individual product page, before anything is added to the cart.
Your own headings so the suggestion does not sound like a template
You can customize the heading that appears above cross-sells and above upsells. If several cross-sells are triggered at checkout and a specific heading does not fit all of them, you set a generic fallback heading. It is a small detail, but a message unrelated to what is in the cart takes away more than it adds.
Knowing whether the offer sells or just gets in the way with EDD Cross-sell and Upsell
Suggesting by gut feeling is of little use if you never measure it. The plugin includes:
- Reports: a summary of the total number of sales and earnings for each product as a cross-sell or upsell.
- Payment details: in each order you can see which purchased products were cross-sells and which were upsells.
- Logs: like the other EDD logs, they let you look up the cross-sells or upsells for a specific payment ID.
- CSV export: a history of both types, filterable by month, year or status.
With that data you can drop suggestions nobody accepts and reinforce the ones that work.
Things to know before setting it up
Setup is done from a metabox on each product's edit screen, so with a large catalog it takes some time. The plugin is translation ready, useful if you sell in several languages.
