About EventON - API Events
The secondary site shows the calendar and the visit ends up on the main one
An association with several branches, a brand with a microsite, a partner who wants to announce your program. Each site asks for your calendar, and if you copy it by hand, one time change turns into several corrections. Keeping a single source saves that work, but it brings a consequence worth thinking through before pasting the code.
When someone clicks an event, the visitor leaves the external site and lands on the details on your site. For you it is a source of traffic. For whoever lends you the space, it is an exit. If the other site is yours, decide which site should keep the visit. If it belongs to a partner, explain that path from the start.
Event API displays your EventON calendar on other websites, without iFrames, and publishes your events as JSON data for mobile apps and third-party platforms. Events are still managed on the main site. Its features do not include creating events from outside or selling tickets on the external site.
Calendars embedded with a JavaScript snippet
- Any destination site: the snippet goes on WordPress or plain HTML sites, and the external site does not need EventON.
- Full calendar or single event: you can embed either.
- Look preserved: the calendar keeps EventON's styles and interactions.
- Event selection: limit what is shown by category, tag or custom parameters.
- Parameters per calendar: adjust layout, dates and event types.
- Unlimited external calendars: each one has its own settings.
With this, one site can show only the workshops and another only the concerts, as long as you have those event types set up on the main site.
The JSON for anyone coding their own interface
If the destination is an app, the add-on offers a JSON URL with upcoming events. The response groups them under events, identified by ID, with this data:
- Basics: name, start, end, details, time zone, publish status, color, subtitle, image and link.
- Repeats: each with its own start and end.
- Duration type: flags for all-day, month-long or year-long events.
- Location: name, address, latitude and longitude.
- Organizer: name, address and contact.
- Classification: custom fields and event types.
The evoapi_event_data filter lets you add more data. For example, you can include a value from the event's metadata through the theme's functions.php. The output can also be limited by event type or category.
What still depends on your main site
All the content starts there, so you need EventON installed and your events properly classified. Without consistent categories, the filters have little to work with.
The JSON URL delivers upcoming events, so for a historical archive in another app, plan on storing that data yourself and test it first. A snippet pasted on another site also depends on what that editor allows: in Gutenberg, the code goes in a Classic block, in its code editor.
Taking the calendar to a second site
It requires EventON on the source site. After activating the add-on:
- Create the page on the destination site that will show the calendar.
- On the main site, open the EventON settings, go to EventON API and copy the code.
- Paste the code into the destination page.
- If you want a single event type, replace the API URL with the filtered one, shaped like
/wp-json/eventon/calendar?event_type=6, using your domain and ID. - Save, open an event and check where the click leads.
What it combines with and what other calendars offer
EventON Weekly View adds a weekly grid with navigation between weeks to your calendar, for programs with activity almost every day.
If you work with Modern Events Calendar, Event API for MEC copies events between sites, exports scripts and downloads data as JSON. It needs MEC Pro and lets you restrict the API to one domain.
