About Media Library Organizer

Organizing the library once is not enough if the next upload lands without a folder

One day you put things in order: folders by client, by year, by file type. A few weeks later there are new images loose at the root, and the media library is again a long list you can only scan by date.

A library gets messy again with every new file that arrives with no destination, so the initial cleanup does not hold unless uploads have a folder assigned.

Media Library Organizer adds folders and subfolders to the WordPress media library and lets you move files by dragging them. That organization is stored apart from the files: if you deactivate the plugin, the files stay where they were and the folder structure comes back when you reactivate it.

Folders, upload rules and image recognition

  • Unlimited folders and subfolders: files move one by one or in bulk, by dragging.
  • Default folder for new uploads and sorting by upload date, modified date, ID or author.
  • Import of the folder structure from other media plugins.
  • Export of a folder or the whole library as ZIP files, and duplicating a file in one click.
  • Defaults for alt text, caption and description per file type.
  • Smart upload rules: they apply folder, metadata and attributes at the moment of upload, and the upload flow lets you choose the folder.
  • AI categorization through Imagga, which recognizes the visual content and assigns images to folders or custom taxonomies.

It works with the grid and list views, the featured image, page builders and ACF. It supports images, video, audio, PDF, DOC and DOCX, and any other type WordPress allows.

A walkthrough to test with a ZIP of images

This combination is our own, needs the Pro edition and should be checked on your site before using it with real material. Prepare a small ZIP with the images of a single client. Create an upload rule that sends that kind of file to the client's folder with its default alt text, upload the ZIP and let it extract.

Then open the folder and check that each image is where it should be and that the default attributes are the expected ones. If something does not fit, adjust the rule before repeating the process with the full ZIP. If you add Imagga categorization, test it with a small batch too: it assigns by what it recognizes in the image, which may not match your own filing criteria.

What is paid and what depends on others

Upload rules, folder choice during upload, AI categorization, advanced search with multi-select filters, ZIP upload with automatic extraction, zipping several selected files, EXIF and IPTC editing, custom taxonomies, dynamic galleries and compression with WebP conversion belong to the Pro edition. AI categorization also depends on Imagga and the call limits of its plan.

The rules act at upload time. What was already loose at the root is moved by hand, by dragging it, or in blocks.

Installing and creating the first folder

  1. Install the plugin with the WordPress installer and activate it.
  2. Open the media library and create a folder from the folder panel.
  3. Drag files into the folder, or define the default folder for uploads.
  4. If you use the Pro edition, create the upload rules and test with one file before uploading large batches.

Library organizers to compare

The catalog also has FileBird, WP Media Folder and Real Media Library, other plugins for working with folders in the media library.
