About Memberpress BuddyPress Integration
You charge for entry, but the profiles stay in plain sight
You set up a paid community, protect the content and consider the job done. Then someone with no membership opens the members page and sees who is inside. With the integration active, account pages and their subpages are protected, but the members listing and individual profiles are not protected by default. Who takes part is part of what you sell, and that stays open until you tick two boxes.
MemberPress BuddyPress, by Caseproof, is the add-on that connects the two pieces: the rules of MemberPress and the social network of BuddyPress. It does not work on its own. It needs MemberPress and BuddyPress installed, and what it brings is the connection between them and the settings that decide who sees what.
Account, profile and groups in one piece
- The account becomes the profile. The MemberPress account page turns into the BuddyPress profile page. Its look depends on your theme.
- Groups tied to the subscription. Users join or leave BuddyPress groups according to their subscription status.
- Groups per membership. In the Advanced tab of each membership you choose which groups its active subscribers can access.
- Optional free signup. You can set a membership as the BuddyPress Free Lifetime Membership so someone can sign up through BuddyPress without gaining premium access.
Profiles, activity, groups and messaging remain BuddyPress features, and the add-on puts them on the member's path.
The two boxes that close the community
- Protect BuddyPress Profile Pages: a logged-out visitor can no longer open the Members page or the profiles. People without an active membership reach only that page and the MemberPress subpages of their own account, where they can upgrade, resume the subscription or update profile and card. People with at least one active membership see everything.
- Protect Main Members Listing Page: protects the listing from people without an active membership. It also restricts profiles for those who have one, which is why the Allow Access to Other Profiles option exists, restoring that access.
Before opening signups, log in as three users: logged out, without an active membership and with a membership. Check what each one sees.
Three settings not to forget
- Anyone can register: it must be enabled in the WordPress general settings. Without it, signups fail.
- Account Deletion: it is best to disable this BuddyPress option. If enabled, a member can delete their own account and accidentally lose their MemberPress access.
- The /register/ address: BuddyPress creates its registration page there, and it is also the MemberPress default address. Change one of the two, or MemberPress registration pages will show 404 errors.
Installing both pieces and connecting them
It requires MemberPress and the free BuddyPress plugin. The setup order is this:
- Install and activate BuddyPress from Plugins, Add New.
- Install the add-on and tick Enable BuddyPress Integration in MemberPress, Settings, BuddyPress tab.
- Enable User Groups in Settings, BuddyPress, if you will use groups.
- Fix the three settings from the previous section.
- Assign the groups in the Advanced tab of each membership.
- Turn on the protections and test with a user of each type.
If your community does not live on MemberPress and BuddyPress
With Paid Memberships Pro, the equivalent is its add-on for BuddyPress and BuddyBoss. It lets you open or close all of BuddyPress per level, or only parts such as creating groups, sending messages or requesting friendship, and it adds members to the checked groups.
If you prefer another social base, PeepSo is an alternative to BuddyPress, and PeepSo User Limits decides what each member can do based on their role, how complete their profile is or their membership.
BuddyBoss, free members and themes
Does it also work with BuddyBoss?
Yes. The BuddyBoss integration needs this add-on, and it has its own setup.
Can I have free and paying members in the same community?
Yes. The membership chosen as Free Lifetime Membership will be free and without premium access. It is best to create a new one for that purpose.
Does a user without an active membership lose their account?
With profile protection on, they keep access to the MemberPress subpages of their account to resume the subscription or update their details.
Does it look the same on every theme?
No. The look of the profile page depends on your theme.
