About Profile Builder - Custom Profile Menus Add-On
Your menu does not know who is looking at it
A member has already logged in and still sees "Log in" at the top right. Someone else arrives for the first time and finds "Edit profile", a link that is no use to them. The WordPress menu shows the same thing to everyone, unless someone explains the difference to it.
On a site with accounts, the menu stays with the user on every page, and it should change with their situation. People without an account need a way to register, people with one need to log in, and people already inside need to leave or correct their details.
Custom Profile Menus is a Profile Builder add-on that adds those items to the menu. It also lets you show each one according to session state and user role, and open the forms in a window over the page.
Five items for the menu
- Register - iFrame: the registration form in a popup window.
- Login - iFrame: the login form in a popup window.
- Edit Profile - iFrame: profile editing in a popup window.
- Login / Logout: a single item with one label for logging in and another for logging out.
- Logout: just the logout button.
They appear in the PB Custom Profile Menus section of the menu editor, so you place and order them alongside your other links.
Who sees each link
Each item has a Display Mode with three options: logged-in users, logged-out users or everyone.
Role goes one step further, with a condition. Restricting an item by role only works if Display Mode is set to logged-in users. For example, to show a link only to subscribers, you choose that mode and tick the Subscriber role.
That combination helps on sites with several account types. A profile editing item can stay visible only to the roles that should use it, without duplicating the menu.
It is worth setting the mode of the Logout button too: if you choose logged-in users, people who have not logged in will not see it.
The page behind each window
An iFrame item shows a page of your site, so that page has to exist first. Each one carries the matching Profile Builder shortcode:
- Registration:
[wppb-register] - Login, also for Login / Logout:
[wppb-login] - Edit profile:
[wppb-edit-profile]
In the item you define that page's URL, the navigation label, the iFrame title and the title attribute. You also set the height and width in pixels.
Those measurements are fixed, so check the window on a phone as well as on desktop. The add-on does not create forms either: the fields and their behavior stay in Profile Builder.
Activating the add-on and building the menu
You need a paid edition of Profile Builder, because this add-on runs on it. With the plugin active, these are the steps:
- Go to Profile Builder, open Add-ons and activate Custom Profile Menus.
- Create the registration, login and edit profile pages with their shortcodes.
- Open Appearance and then Menus, and create a menu if you do not have one yet.
- In PB Custom Profile Menus, select an item and click Add to Menu.
- Fill in the URL, the labels, the size and the Display Mode.
- Save the menu and review it logged out and with one account of each role.
If your site uses another account system
With LoginPress, Login Logout Menu brings six items that change depending on whether there is a session, and it can return the person to the page they were on. Its features do not include rules by role, which is exactly what you can apply here.
If your site runs on Paid Memberships Pro, there is also PMPro Nav Menus, an add-on made for that plugin's menus.
Points that tend to hold up the setup
Does it work without Profile Builder?
No. It is an add-on and needs a paid edition of Profile Builder active on the site.
Can I show a link to one role only?
Yes. Set Display Mode to logged-in users and tick the role that should see it.
Why is the role I ticked not applied?
Check the Display Mode. The restriction by role only works with the logged-in users option.
Can I change the login and logout text?
Yes. Login / Logout has a label for each state, plus the URL of the login page.
Does the Logout button need its own page?
Its settings are limited to the navigation label, the title attribute and the Display Mode.
