About SearchWP WPML Integration
When the search box answers in a language the visitor can't read
On a multilingual site, the person using the search box already knows what they want and has the least patience. If they type in Spanish and the results include pages in English or German, they don't think something is missing a translation: they think their language is poorly served, and they leave. The menu gets translated with care, but the search is usually the last thing anyone checks.
SearchWP WPML Integration is the piece that connects two plugins: it makes SearchWP respect the active language managed by WPML.
What changes when SearchWP WPML Integration is active
Once the extension is activated, SearchWP limits results to the language WPML has active at that moment. Someone browsing the French version sees French content, with no mixing, and there is no code to touch. Before buying, be clear about its limits:
- It needs SearchWP: it is an extension, not a search engine on its own. Without the base plugin it does nothing.
- It needs WPML installed: WPML defines the languages and which language each piece of content belongs to.
- It translates nothing: it filters by language the content you have already translated. The filter only shows what exists in that language.
- Self-hosted WordPress only: SearchWP does not work on WordPress.com.
Common questions from people working with WPML
Does it work without WPML?
No. The extension relies on the active language that WPML manages, so both plugins must be installed along with SearchWP.
Do I need to code anything?
No. You activate the extension and the language restriction is applied to searches automatically.
Does it highlight the search terms?
SearchWP can highlight terms in the results and generate excerpts around the highlights. That is a capability of the base plugin, not of this extension.
Does it index author details?
Not by default, but SearchWP lets you teach it to index whatever content you want, including author information.
What SearchWP adds beneath the language filter
The language filter only decides which results can be shown. The quality of those results depends on the SearchWP engine:
- Adjustable algorithm: it can index custom fields, taxonomies, tags and PDF content, not just title and text.
- Results order: it lets you prioritize specific results for a keyword.
- Live search and statistics: suggestions as people type and data on what they search for, useful for creating content that is missing in each language.
Activation takes one click, but testing every language takes longer
Activation is immediate, checking is not. Once it is on, search the same term in each language of your site and confirm that only results in that language come up.
Also review the cases that fail most often on a half-translated site: pages with no version in a language, custom fields and PDFs. If a language has little content, its search will show few results, and that is fixed by translating, not with the extension.
