About Soliloquy Thumbnails Addon
Nobody knows what is on your fourth slide
You prepare five slides for the home page: the offer, the new service, a testimonial, the latest project and the seasonal notice. The visitor sees the first, maybe the second, and keeps scrolling. The other three were there, but nothing on the screen gave away what they held. Arrows or dots say there is more; they do not say what.
A slider hides its own content, because it only shows one thing at a time; thumbnails turn that hidden row into something people can see and choose from. It changes what you ask of the visitor: instead of waiting or clicking blindly, they see the whole set and jump to what interests them.
Soliloquy Thumbnails Addon adds that navigation to Soliloquy sliders. It is an add-on: it needs the main plugin and does not create sliders by itself.
A strip of thumbnails that works as a menu
The add-on generates a copy of the slider and uses it to create the thumbnails visitors navigate with. Its options let you adjust the following:
- Position: above or below the slider.
- Size and quantity: thumbnail width and the minimum and maximum number displayed.
- Alignment: left or right.
- Loop: thumbnails can repeat continuously.
- Arrows: optional on the thumbnail strip.
- Separate cropping: they can be cropped even when main image cropping is off.
- Different image: each thumbnail can be a different image from its slide.
- Mobile: an option on the Mobile tab turns them on or off on phones.
Thumbnails are responsive, just like the slider. They also work for building a carousel with thumbnails or an image slideshow.
The thumbnail has to explain itself
In the official demo, the slider measures 1200 by 600 pixels and its thumbnails 75 by 50, cropped and with a 5-pixel margin. Three show at a time, below the slider and looping. At that size, a slide with a lot of text over the photo loses its message.
That is what defining a thumbnail different from the main image is for: a slide loaded with text can show just the product or the customer's face below. Three checks help before publishing:
- Look at each thumbnail at its real size and ask whether it stands out from the others.
- Decide how many fit at once in your page width.
- Review the slider on a phone before leaving thumbnails active there.
What stays with Soliloquy itself
It adds navigation to a slider that already exists. Slides, transitions and captions are managed in Soliloquy, and effects you see in the demo, such as the lightbox, are turned on separately.
Nor does it turn a bad slider into a good one: if the slides are not interesting, seeing them small does not change the result. Soliloquy does not work on WordPress.com or outside WordPress, so you need a self-hosted site.
Turning on thumbnails in a Soliloquy slider
Install Soliloquy if you do not have it yet, add the add-on and follow these steps:
- Activate Soliloquy Thumbnails Addon.
- Create a new slider or edit an existing one.
- Open the Thumbnails tab and tick Enable Slider Thumbnails.
- Configure the other thumbnail options.
- Check on the Mobile tab whether they should show on phones.
- Click Publish or Update to save.

Does it work without Soliloquy?
No. It is a Soliloquy add-on and its options appear inside each slider's editing screen.
Can I hide them on mobile?
Yes, from the slider's Mobile tab.
Does the thumbnail have to be the same image?
No. You can define one different from the slide's main image.
Does it also work for carousels?
Yes, you can create a carousel with thumbnails.
Does it apply to all my sliders?
It is turned on slider by slider, with the checkbox on its Thumbnails tab.
