About Toolset Types WordPress Plugin

Data written inside the text cannot be filtered or related

You start by publishing properties, events or recipes as normal posts, with the square metres, the date or the ingredients written in the body text. It works until the day you want to list one speaker's events, separate recipes by ingredient or show the same information on another page. Then you find that this data does not exist as data: it is sentences.

What costs the most to correct later is not a site's design, but the way you stored its content.

Toolset Types lets you define that structure from the WordPress dashboard, before loading the content. And it has a limit worth knowing from the start: it organises the data, but building the templates and lists that show it is the job of another Toolset piece.

Content types, taxonomies and fields from the dashboard

  • Custom post types: you give the plural and singular names, and the new type appears in the admin menu.
  • Custom taxonomies: to classify that content by your own criteria.
  • Custom fields in groups: created, grouped and assigned to your post types.
  • Repeating fields: a field can accept several instances, although not all field types can do so.
  • Repeatable groups: a set of fields that repeats, such as the name and quantity of each ingredient. To display them on the site you need a View.
  • Conditional fields: a field or a whole group is shown or hidden in the dashboard.
  • Validation: you mark fields as required, and non-text fields check that the data is valid.

An event with several speakers, and the data that lives between them

Types allows parent and child relationships between post types, and many-to-many ones too: an event has several speakers and a speaker takes part in several events.

The many-to-many relationship also accepts its own fields. Think of the talk title, the time or the room: that data belongs neither to the event nor to the speaker, but to the link between the two. Types stores it in an intermediary item, and it can then be displayed or used as a condition.

Templates, public submissions and maps live in other Toolset plugins

Toolset is made of several pieces, and Types is the one that defines the content:

  • Toolset Blocks displays content on the public side, including custom searches.
  • Toolset Forms creates public forms so users can add or edit content.
  • Toolset Maps puts content on a map. The Address field is only available with this plugin installed and active.

If your project needs several of them, keep them up to date together: do not mix new and older versions of Toolset components.

Compatibility and your first content type

The Toolset suite runs on PHP from version 7.4 to 8.5. Once Types is active, these are the first steps:

  1. Go to Toolset, Dashboard, and click Add new post type. Enter the plural and singular names: the slug is generated automatically.
  2. Save the post type and add its fields.
  3. Create the relationships in Toolset, Relationships, with the wizard that guides you step by step.

Other ways to model content in the catalogue

Within the same family, Toolset Views is one of the Toolset legacy plugins.

If you prefer another base, ACF PRO offers repeaters, flexible content, options pages and a PHP system for building your own blocks. Meta Box AIO includes tools for post types, a visual form builder and many-to-many relationships between posts, terms and users.

If you build with Elementor, JetEngine brings together post types, fields, relations and listings, and it also works with the block editor, Bricks and Divi.

Questions about Types and the rest of Toolset

Do I need to know how to code?

Not to define post types, fields and relationships: it is all done from the dashboard, without writing HTML, CSS, JavaScript or PHP.

Does Types display the fields on the site by itself?

Its job is to define the content. Toolset Blocks is there for building templates, archives and lists.

Can users publish from the public side with it?

That function belongs to Toolset Forms, a separate plugin.
