About MainWP Matomo (Piwik) Extension
Unique visitors do not add up, and the client report is where it shows most
Month end at an agency: open Matomo, switch site, copy the figures into the client report, switch to the next site. With fifteen clients that is half a morning, and the temptation is to fill in the monthly figure by adding up what is at hand.
That is the trap. A person who visits on three different days is one unique visitor on each of those days and still only one in the month, so adding up daily uniques inflates the total. This extension brings Matomo data into the MainWP panel and into reports, but it does not change that arithmetic: for a custom period the metric may be unavailable, and filling the gap with a sum gives a false figure.
What appears in the MainWP panel
- Matomo Analytics widget on the Dashboard overview and on each site's overview.
- Connection to Matomo Cloud or On-Premise using the Matomo address and an API token. Since version 5.2.1 it also accepts Matomo installed in a subfolder.
- Per-site assignment: you choose the property when editing each site, or turn on automatic matching.
- Data settings: reporting period, sync frequency and a connection timeout of 1 to 30 seconds.
- Data for Pro Reports: visits, pageviews, pages per visit, bounce rate, unique visitors and average time on site.
- Permissions with Team Control: only roles with the Matomo permission can view or change a site's property.
Custom ranges: Cloud and On-Premise do not behave alike
On custom ranges, unique visitors may be unavailable depending on the Matomo service and configuration. It changes with the installation:
- On-Premise: the metric can be enabled by following Matomo's guide.
- Matomo Cloud: it cannot be enabled for custom ranges.
What you must have sorted in Matomo first
It does not install tracking. The extension does not insert tracking code into child sites: it goes in by hand or through another plugin. If a site is not tracked in Matomo, there is nothing to read here.
It does not work with every Matomo. Matomo for WordPress and Piwik Pro are not supported, which matters because Matomo's old name was Piwik and Piwik Pro is a different product.
One property, one site. Each Matomo property is assigned to only one MainWP site.
A changing connection has a cost. Changing server, port or subfolder requires a new token, and connection changes can invalidate assignments and cached data, in which case properties have to be assigned again.
Removing a site does not delete its data. When it leaves MainWP the local assignments go, but the property and data stay on the Matomo server.
Connecting Matomo to your MainWP Dashboard
You need a MainWP Dashboard with PHP 8.1 or higher and WordPress 6.2 or higher (for version 5.2.1), Matomo served over HTTPS, an API token with access to your properties, and the sites already tracked in Matomo and added to MainWP.
- Go to MainWP, Add-ons, Matomo, Settings.
- Enter the Matomo address and the token. The address uses HTTPS, with no parameters, fragments or credentials, and includes the subfolder if there is one.
- Choose the reporting period, sync frequency and timeout.
- Save: MainWP validates the connection and loads the properties.
- Edit each site in Manage Sites, choose the property under Matomo account property and click Update Site.
Other extensions for measuring and reporting from MainWP
If your sites measure with Google Analytics, MainWP Google Analytics Extension gathers the child sites' GA4 data in the same panel.
To deliver the result, MainWP Pro Reports turns site activity into branded PDF reports and emails them on a schedule or on demand. And MainWP Team Control creates roles limited to specific features and sites inside the Dashboard.
Questions about Matomo in MainWP
Does it work with the Matomo for WordPress plugin?
No, and not with Piwik Pro either. It works with Matomo Cloud or On-Premise.
Can I see unique visitors on a custom range?
It depends on your Matomo. On-Premise can enable it; Matomo Cloud cannot.
Are my statistics deleted if I remove a site from MainWP?
No. The property and tracking data stay on the Matomo server.
