About Paid Memberships Pro - Zapier Add On
Connecting your membership site to your CRM, spreadsheet or email marketing tool often ends up as copying and pasting member data by hand, or asking a developer for code nobody maintains. This add on handles that through webhooks and Zapier, but you should know up front that it is a legacy option.
Paid Memberships Pro - Zapier Add On: a legacy method
Paid Memberships Pro already includes native Zapier support in the plugin itself, with no need for this add on. That native integration allows multiple events for each action and trigger, something the webhooks in this add on cannot do. If you are starting from scratch, the sensible move is to try the native integration first. This add on makes sense if you already work with webhooks, maintain automations built this way or simply prefer that method.
What data leaves your site for other applications
The add on sends information to Zapier when something happens in your membership. There are four triggers:
- Changed membership level: fires when a user changes level.
- New order: when an order is created.
- Updated order: when an existing one is modified, for example when it is marked as refunded.
- After checkout: when a member completes checkout.
With the level change, for example, Zapier receives the username, email, user ID, level name and ID, start and end dates, initial payment, billing cycle data, expiration period and the status of the previous level. With that you can log every signup in a Google Sheets spreadsheet or send the new member's details to your CRM.
What you can automate with it
Zapier acts as a bridge to other applications. Common examples:
- Syncing members with a CRM such as HubSpot, Salesforce or ActiveCampaign.
- Sending each new member's details to your email tool.
- Logging orders in Google Sheets, QuickBooks or Airtable.
- Triggering actions in another app when someone joins, renews or cancels.
Everything is built with the Zapier editor, without writing code. A membership business usually has its money spread across payment gateway, email and accounting, and member data rarely matches between those tools. Automating the handoff stops every signup or cancellation from depending on someone remembering to update it.
It also receives data: Zapier can modify your members
The connection works in both directions. In the add on settings (Memberships > PMPro Zapier) you will find a Webhook Handler URL and an API key. With them, an external application can send updates to your member data through a zap. Treat that key like a password and do not share it.
Zapier is a separate, paid service
Here is the gap that surprises people most. This add on is only the WordPress side of the connection; Zapier does the work, and webhooks require a monthly Zapier subscription. The native Paid Memberships Pro integration has no fees as long as your zaps fit within Zapier's free plan. Also:
- Already solved by the add on: sending order and level-change data by webhook, and receiving member updates.
- Covered by you or another tool: the Zapier account and its plan, creating and testing each zap, the columns in your spreadsheets and the setup of the destination apps.
- Prerequisite: the Paid Memberships Pro plugin installed and active; the add on does not work on its own.
Each zap is tested by causing the real event: changing a user's level, creating an order or completing a checkout. It is worth doing this before publishing.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need this add on to use Zapier with Paid Memberships Pro?
No. The plugin has native Zapier support, and it is the recommended option over this add on.
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No, it needs the main plugin installed and activated.
Does it only work with Zapier?
It is designed for Zapier, although the webhook method also lets you connect other automation platforms.
Do I have to code?
Not for the usual automations: you paste webhook URLs into the settings and build the zap in Zapier. There are also action and filter hooks for those who want to go further.
Is using webhooks with Zapier free?
Zapier requires a monthly subscription to use webhooks, separate from this add on.
