About ShopMagic for WooCommerce Subscriptions
Charges customers didn't expect are the ones that end in cancellations
Many subscriptions aren't cancelled out of dissatisfaction but out of surprise: a charge the customer didn't remember, a free trial that ends without warning, or a manual renewal nobody pays because nobody remembered. WooCommerce Subscriptions handles the payments, but it doesn't write to the customer with the tone and timing you want.
ShopMagic WooCommerce Subscriptions is a ShopMagic add-on that turns each subscription event into an automatic email. The underlying idea: in a recurring business, the advance notice isn't advertising, it's part of the service. Customers who know when and how much they will pay renew with less friction; those who find out from the charge on their bank statement come to you with a complaint.
Five moments in a subscription when you can write to the customer
Each of these events can trigger an email (or an SMS notification via Twilio):
- After a new subscription: a welcome and an explanation of what is charged and when.
- When the status changes: pause, cancellation, reactivation or failed payment, each with its own message.
- Before renewal: the notice that prevents complaints and lets you offer an upgrade.
- Before it ends: for subscriptions with an end date, a chance to suggest continuing.
- When the trial ends: the moment the customer decides whether to stay.
Emails are written in a visual editor, with no need to touch PHP templates. To chain them into sequences with waits between messages, ShopMagic offers a delayed actions add-on.
Filters and subscription data so each email reaches the right customer
Not every subscriber deserves the same message. You can condition sending on status, total, payment method, shipping method, order categories or products, item count, parent order status, dates (created, paid, completed), custom fields, and whether the renewal is manual.
Inside the text you can insert data such as the next payment date, trial end, total amount, payment method, number of payments made, billing or shipping addresses, and links to view the subscription, change the payment method or renew early. A notice with the amount and a link to update the card solves more than a generic one.
Besides sending messages, there are actions to change a subscription's date, change its status or switch it to manual renewal.
Are the default notices enough, or do you need to add ShopMagic?
This add-on doesn't work on its own: it needs WooCommerce Subscriptions installed and the base ShopMagic plugin, and it is part of ShopMagic PRO. It doesn't charge customers or create subscription plans; it only automates communication. If the default emails are enough for you, you don't need it. If you want to warn customers before renewing, win back cancellations or suggest an upgrade at the right moment, it makes sense.
Does it work without WooCommerce Subscriptions?
No. It is an extension of that plugin and depends on it.
Can I send SMS as well as emails?
Yes, through the Twilio integration.
Do I have to edit PHP templates?
No, messages are created and customized with the email editor.
Can I write only to people who renew manually?
Yes, there is a condition based on whether the subscription requires manual renewal.
