About WP File Download
Publishing a document is easy; its second version is the hard part
You upload the price list as a PDF and link it from three pages. Six months later it changes, you upload another file and fix two of the links. Now two price lists coexist, and someone downloads the old one from the page you forgot.
A downloads area gets messy when you update it, which is why it is worth choosing one with the document that will change in mind.
WP File Download is a download manager for WordPress that organizes files in its own categories. When you update or replace a file, the previous version is stored automatically in its history. The same document can sit in several categories, so you stop maintaining loose copies.
A library with history
- Unlimited files and categories, with multiple drag-and-drop uploads and ordering changed by dragging.
- Versions: keeps up to 99 versions per file and restores an earlier one in one click.
- Several categories for one file: assigned from a single master file.
- Remote files: you add a title, description and URL, and they download like any other.
- Server folders: imports a folder and can synchronize it with a category automatically.
- Upload form: you insert it on the site and files reach the category you choose for review.
Who can see each file and who downloaded it
Access starts from WordPress roles. For each role you define which actions are allowed, such as download, update, delete or edit only your own files. Visibility is set per category or per file, and can be limited to specific users. Each category or file also accepts an owner.
Statistics record who downloaded what when the person is logged in. They filter by category, file and date, and they export.
Email notifications cover uploads, edits, removals, metadata changes and downloads. They can go to the owner, to administrators or to recipients you specify.
How it appears and gets found on the site
Each category can use its own theme, including a table, a Google Drive-style view and an accordion folder tree. You adjust colors and visible data, or clone a theme to create another. Visitors can preview PDFs and other documents in the browser, and download a category or a selection of files as a .zip.
The site search offers full-text search, with background indexing and filters by category, tag and date. It can integrate with the native WordPress search.
There are widgets for Elementor, blocks for Gutenberg and modules or elements for Divi, WPBakery and Avada. It is also compatible with WPML and Polylang.
Separate connectors and first steps
The cloud does not come in the base plugin. Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud and Amazon S3 connect through an addon installed separately, and each service needs its own setup: a Dropbox app, an Azure app, a Google Cloud project or an IAM user with its bucket. Social Locker, which gates downloads behind a social action, is also an additional piece. Selling files requires WooCommerce.
To get started:
- Install the plugin with the WordPress installer and activate it.
- Open WP File Download in the side menu and review the parameters under Configuration.
- Create a category and drag in the files.
- Set access by role, choose the theme and insert the category with its block, widget or shortcode.

Do I lose the files when uninstalling it?
Not by default. They are deleted only if you enable Delete all files on uninstall in the settings.
