About WPForms Signature Addon

The signature is saved, but what about the text that was signed?

You send an agreement, the client promises to print it, sign it and scan it, and days go by. You put a signature field on a form and the problem seems solved: they sign from their phone and the entry reaches your WordPress.

Months later you open that entry because someone asks what they committed to. You find their name and their signature. The question is whether you also find the exact terms they had in front of them, especially if those were on a page you have edited since. Collecting a signature is the easy part; what can slip away is keeping what was signed.

The WPForms Signature addon adds a signature field to your forms and saves each signature with its entry, with no external portal or separate login. Your attention is better spent on what gets archived alongside it.

Signing with a finger, a mouse or a typed name

  • Two methods: Draw for tracing with a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen, and Type for writing a name, which is shown in a handwriting-style font and saved as an image.
  • Required field: the form will not submit without a signature if you mark it so.
  • Conditional logic: the signature appears only when it is relevant.
  • Payment in the same submission: it combines with Stripe, PayPal, Square or Authorize.Net, useful for a deposit on acceptance.
  • PNG export: with a transparent background, to place in a contract.
  • Email alert: with {all_fields}, the image goes inside the notification.
  • Connections: Google Drive, Dropbox, HubSpot, Salesforce or Notion, and workflows with Zapier, Make or n8n.

It works for service contracts, waivers, consent forms, client agreements and onboarding documents. It can be paired with the GDPR Agreement field in the same form.

Two ways to keep the agreement with the signature

Before publishing, send a test form, open the entry in WPForms, Entries, and see what was kept. If the agreement text is missing, you have these routes to try:

  • Notification with the text: copy the terms into the message, add {all_fields} and send a copy to the signer. Each party receives the text and the signature.
  • WPForms PDF: its PDF addon includes what the form collects, signatures included, and attaches it to the notifications you choose. It has document templates.

A signature field, not a signing room

Signature is a field inside a form. An audit trail, a completion certificate and a circuit for sending a document to several people in order are not among its features. If your business signs long documents between several parties, consider a dedicated tool.

Signatures are saved only as PNG, not JPG. And the server must have GD or ImageMagick to process the image: without either, submission may produce errors. Ask your hosting provider if you do not know whether php-gd or php-imagick are active.

Setting up the first signed form

It runs on WPForms Pro, in its latest version. With that ready:

  1. Install and activate the Signature addon.
  2. Create a form or start from the File Upload With Signature Form template.
  3. Drag the Signature field from Fancy Fields.
  4. Under Advanced, choose Draw or Type and mark the field as required if needed.
  5. Set up the notification and save the form.
  6. Sign from a phone and review the entry and the email.

If you sign outside WPForms or need a full record

When the signature is the center of the process, WP E-Signature works with documents in your WordPress and provides an audit trail and a completion certificate.

If you use another builder, there is Gravity Forms Signature, the signature addon for Fluent Forms, the one for Formidable Forms and Signature Field for Elementor. To generate PDFs, the catalog includes E2Pdf.

What the client sees and where the signature ends up

Can it be signed from a phone?

Yes. The field is responsive and accepts a finger, stylus or mouse on any device.

Can clients type their name instead of drawing it?

Yes, with the Type method. WPForms shows it in a handwriting-style font and saves it as an image.

Where do I see the signatures?

In WPForms, Entries, inside each entry, and in the email if you use {all_fields}.

Does the signature appear in the PDF?

Yes, if you use the PDF addon and the form collects a signature. Check it with a test entry.
