About GetPaid Multi-Currency
Each currency you add is a price list you have to watch
You sell a consulting service in dollars and a European client asks to pay in euros. You add the currency, charge them and the matter seems closed. But the euro is not worth the same the following week, and the amount the next client sees depends on the exchange rate saved on your site.
An exchange rate is a pricing decision, even if it does not look like one. If it updates by itself, your price in that currency moves without you doing anything. If you set it by hand, it stays stable and you are the one who has to review it when the market changes. Multi-Currency, the GetPaid add-on, lets customers choose the payment currency and gives you both options. It is worth deciding which to use before you offer the first extra currency.
What the customer picks and where they pick it
There are two moments, and you can use whichever fits the way you sell:
- During payment: a new currency select field for payment forms. It is optional, so it only appears if you add it.
- Before reaching payment: a currency switcher, available as a widget or block, with which the customer saves a preferred currency for the whole site.
The field works if you sell through one specific form. The switcher is more useful if customers browse several pages before making up their minds.
Two ways to keep exchange rates current
- Automatic updates: rates refresh through an API service.
- Manual rates: you type them in when you need to.
The first option cuts the work. The second gives stability if you prefer a price that does not vary from one client to the next, and leaves you the job of reviewing it. Whichever you choose, set a date to look at the amounts: a fee that seemed round may stop being so.
Your invoice shows the currency, your gateway takes the payment
Invoices and receipts show the currency they were paid with. This is the part your client will keep, and it stays in the currency of the transaction.
Your bookkeeping, on the other hand, will hold documents in several currencies. If you keep your accounts in just one, agree with whoever manages them how those amounts are converted before you start.
Multi-Currency does not process payments: that task belongs to the gateway you use with GetPaid. So before adding a currency, confirm that your gateway and your account accept it. Also run a test charge for each currency and check the receipt.
The choice is the customer's: its features do not include detecting the currency from their country. And only the currencies you add are offered, so you can start with one or two.
GetPaid running and the first test currency
You need GetPaid, the main plugin, installed and active. With that ready:
- Install and activate the add-on.
- Add only the currencies you want to allow.
- Choose between automatic and manual rates.
- Place the field in your payment form, the widget or block on your site, or both.
- Make a test payment in each currency and check the amount, the invoice and the receipt.
PDF invoices and other gateways for billing abroad
- PDF Invoices attaches the PDF invoice to GetPaid emails, useful when your clients keep the document.
- GetPaid Square Payment Gateway adds Square, with a country restriction you should review before choosing it.
- GetPaid Mollie Payments is another gateway for the same plugin.
- WPC Multi Currency changes the currency prices are displayed in, if your store runs on WooCommerce rather than GetPaid.
